Eucalyptus Oil for Safer Solutions

Eucalyptus oil has been valued as a medicine for centuries by Aboriginals who used the leaves to treat fevers and other infectious conditions. The first extract of pure eucalyptus oil was distilled by a Sydney surgeon in 1788 and in the years to follow was commercially produced and used as a wound antiseptic during World War 1 as well as a treatment for influenza, typhoid and meningitis.

Today we know that eucalyptus oil is an effective antibacterial, antiviral and anti inflammatory agent and is often reached for at the first sign of colds, flus and coughs. Used externally as a chest rub and in steam inhalations, it brings fast relief to the sniffles, catarrh and blocked noses. It is thought that Eucalyptus oil reduces inflammation in the airways and makes mucus in the lungs, nose and sinuses more fluid in consistency enabling it to be expelled more easily.  The oil is also commonly used to reduce the discomfort of strained muscles, aching joints backache and arthritis due to its pain relieving effects. Eucalyptus oil also has a cooling effect on the skin and can be used to help ease the sting of sunburn and insect bites and may also be used as a household cleaner.

Research has shown that patients who chewed gum containing a eucalyptus extract showed reduced dental plaque formation. Furthermore, some research has begun to look at this oil for its antimicrobial activity against dust mites in the home.

So what is it about eucalyptus oil that makes it so useful?? Much of the eucalyptus oil produced commercially contains a high level of a compound called eucalyptol which is generally regarded as the main active ingredient that is responsible for many of the oils medicinal properties. However, due to this high concentration eucalyptus oil should be diluted for use within the home.

Some of us are concerned about the use of harsh chemicals found in many household cleaning agents and their potential damage to us and the environment.  Not to mention the dollar value!  As a natural antiseptic and disinfectant, eucalyptus oil has become an increasingly popular alternative, try this multipurpose surface cleaner:   .

600 ml white vinegar

300 ml water

20 to 30 drops eucalyptus oil

Put all ingredients into a spray bottle and shake thoroughly. Spray a little onto a soft, damp cloth and wipe down area to be cleaned. No rinsing required.
