The Origins of Spring Cleaning

The term spring cleaning refers to the yearly act of cleaning a house from top to bottom which takes place in the first warm days of the year typically in the spring time. It has been suggested that the origins of spring cleaning go back to the Persian new year, which falls on the first day of spring.  Similar traditions and points of origin of spring cleaning can be traced to the ancient Jewish practice of thoroughly cleansing the home in anticipation of the spring time memorial feast of Passover as well as the Scottish “New Year’s cleaning”. The custom found an especial practical value due to regions’ continental and wet climates. For example before the invention of the vacuum cleaner, spring was often the best time for dusting as it was warm enough to open windows and doors without insects being a problem.
